Just a heads up in case it saves someone some grief:
I just lost a week debugging "bad wifi" issues that ultimately had nothing to do with wifi or with a bad voltage regulator, but rather a counterfeit CP2102 that was leaking 5 volts to the ESP32 (4.05v to the En pin, and 5v to Rx). Easy to check for this if you have otherwise inexplicable wifi issues: just measure the voltages at En and Rx on the dev board relative to Gnd. They should both be 3.3v. If they're notably higher, likely you have the same issue I did. Chuck the boards and get new ones. The other clue for these exact chips is they say "S1LABs" instead of "SILABS".
The offending boards were from Amazon Oct 9, seller "AITRIP". I just got some overnight from Amazon from "KeeYees" which are exactly the same board (30 pin layout, same components, same positions) but with no-name CP2102 chips that work fine. (I also ordered ESP8266s from KeeYees years ago that were fine, fwiw.)
